Military attacks

He was gone.

I pushed on the wooden door that usually had three sets of locks holding it to the frame. They were thoroughly destroyed, leaving the door barely on its hinges. With the tiny push I gave, the door swung open happily. It would do no good against the demons now.

“Tia.”

The mess of my living space was not the happy place I had left it. Metal that once littered the bench tops and floor now lay cluttered to one side. Too many boots had come through, pushing it to the side. I ran my eyes over half completed builds which were not laying where I had left them. Schematics ripped.

I stepped into the room, and it no longer felt like my home. No longer too cramped, too full of my things. It felt foreign, like everything here was no longer mine. The military had touched it, and it wasn’t whole anymore.

The door to the bedroom hung off its hinges, and I just stared at it. I didn’t have any idea how to repair it like this.

“Tia…”

I stepped through the door to the bedroom, and my eyes widened in horror. Bullet holes through the thin mattress, the back of my house was half collapsed, the rock of the walls converted to spikes in an attempt at defense. But there would be no defense now. There was no need. He was gone. There was nothing left for them to take.

The half completed parts for my hoverboard lay in a pile in the corner. I could feel them through the rock shield he’d placed over them. Despite everything, he’d tried to save them for me.

“Tia, you need to listen to me.”

Anna was there, her hands over my shoulders as she dragged at my body. She pulled me around until I faced her. The movement made me acutely aware of the tears streaming down my face as I surveyed the damage. Anna was relentless, giving me a shake to pull my attention back to her.

“Tia,” she said again. Her eyes found mine and held them. “Listen.”

It was easier to focus on her than on the ruins of my house. With her at least, there was feeling there. As I looked at her, I felt something ignite within me.

“We need to get out of here,” she told me. “The military was here, and they took Rockslide. If we’re here when they come back, they might take us too.”

But the face of my friend looked more like that of a stranger as I understood what she must have done. Concern was written on her face, but it had been on their face too. I could not trust the faces of Narcs.

“How could you?” The rage that had sparked deep within me flared. “Anna,” I frowned, looking her over. “How could you?” My was voice barely more than a whisper. But I felt the rage building behind my words. I had never thought I could say such a thing to my best friend, someone who had picked me up after the incident with my parents.
